Chasing the Kamakura Sunset by E-Bike

Want to know when Kamakura’s coastline is at its most beautiful? The hour before sunset. The bay turns orange, Enoshima becomes a silhouette, and on clear days Mt. Fuji appears behind it — right after most tourists have boarded their trains home.

Why 3 PM Is the Right Start

You don’t need a full day. Our favorite version of this is the 2-hour plan leaving the garage at 3 PM (QUICK RIDE, ¥3,500). It works as a “one more ride” after the Buddha and the shrines, or as the whole plan on a day you arrive in Kamakura after lunch.

The Route

  1. Garage → Zaimokuza Beach (7 min) — get to the water first. At this hour the light comes in sideways and the sand goes gold, with Enoshima and Fuji lined up across the bay
  2. East along the shore, over the Kotsubo hill (10 min) — fishing-port lanes and one short climb. On an e-bike, the hill never touches your legs
  3. Zushi Marina (5 min) — palm-lined promenades and a yacht harbor. For a moment you’ll forget you’re in Japan; this is Shonan’s most cinematic sunset spot
  4. Wait for sunset under the palms — Fuji and Enoshima in silhouette across the water. The marina boardwalk is the best seat in the house

The Ride Home Is the Highlight

The ten minutes back along the Zaimokuza shoreline — street lights flickering on over the water — is secretly the best part of this route. Lights on, keep left, take it slow (riding rules here).

Sunset time swings widely with the seasons. Check it before you book, and count back two hours.
